Brush your teeth and save the world… and what’s the deal with fluoride?
Posted on May 23 2018
What IS the deal with fluoride? Some doctors say it’s safe, and others claim it does more damage than good. We are believers in everyone doing their own research and making their own decisions, but here are a few things to consider based on research:
One argument explains that fluoride is a natural occurrence and therefore safe for us to consume - it comes from nature, so it must be safe! But keep in mind, arsenic is also natural… and that stuff is dangerous! The point of fluoride is to help prevent tooth decay. It does so by repairing cracks in the enamel of your tooth if applied directly onto your tooth. But what does it do to the rest of your insides?
The fact is that we are exposed to fluoride in more than just toothpaste or at the dentist. It is added to our tap water (in many communities) in hopes to help prevent tooth decay by simply drinking the water. But researchers are trying to prove that there is no proven efficacy to having fluoride in our drinking water. Not only that, but they are linking it to other health problems like muscle disorders, bone fractures, increased infertility and more. Don’t take our word for it - check out the sources at the end of this blog - both pros and cons. You be the judge!
Don’t want to take the risk? There are more and more companies coming out who are not into that risk either - and they are making some pretty awesome toothpaste! Not only are they fluoride-free, but cruelty-free, gluten-free, sugar-free and more!
Our favourites are “The Natural Family Co.” Natural toothpaste and for the kiddles, “Jack N’ Jill” Natural Toothpaste. They are both 100% safe to use and the kids paste comes in more fruity flavours in case your kids think peppermint is too “spicy” like mine do!
While we are health-ifying our oral care, let’s take a minute to think about all the toothbrushes that are thrown away; tossed into the oblivion that are landfills to live forevermore beside a bazillion plastic water bottles. Happily, we can end that cycle with amazing new products like biodegradable bamboo toothbrushes. We love the Woobamboo Toothbrush because it also has recyclable packaging! So, brush your teeth and save the world, friends!
